Machines
Machines
Machines are placeable objects that Seedlings operate to produce, process, and extract. There are far too many to list them all, but the Catalog (top-right, book icon) is the in-game database covering every machine, what it produces, and what's needed to craft it. Some of the key ones include:
Crafting machines: e.g., the Survival Workbench and Crafting Table, where Seedlings craft items from materials and schematics.
Resource Extraction Machines: placed on top of resource deposits (clay, water, etc.) found with the Resource Deposit View.
Water pumps and filtration units: produce clean water (operated with the Water Treatment skill); machines can pull water out of the ground or the air (atmospheric extractors).
Medical Fabricator: where a Seedling with the Pharmacy skill crafts remedies.
Cooking and processing machines: furnaces, kilns, ovens, chemistry stations, anvils and similar work stations (these carry fire and injury risk, see below).
Delivery Drones: crafted or bought, they automate deliveries once a Delivery HQ exists.
To make a machine produce, you must create a Production Task on it. Seedlings won't invent tasks by themselves, even if the machine has materials and is turned on. Loading materials into a machine doesn't need the production skill, any Seedling can feed one, only the production itself needs the skill. For continuous work, make sure machines are turned on, materials are available, tasks are set, and there are enough machines that Seedlings aren't waiting for equipment.
Wear and Tear
Most placeable objects, machines included, suffer wear and tear as they're used. Inspect an object to see its durability, then repair via Direct Control or automate repairs through an employment task. Objects below 85% condition cannot be packed and stored.
Fire
Fire is a serious hazard. Kilns, furnaces, and ovens are flammable, and when a Seedling critically fails an activity on a flammable object it can catch fire. This can happen during smelting, cooking, firing pottery and bricks, processing chemicals, or even crafting vases and mirrors. The lower the Seedling's relevant skill, the more likely the critical failure.
Once burning, an object steadily loses durability and is destroyed if the fire isn't extinguished. Fire spreads to nearby flammable objects on the same floor. Wooden furniture (beds, chairs, desks, chests, couches) is flammable too.
Extinguish: right-click the burning object and select Extinguish via Direct Control. Failed attempts can cause burn injuries; the Fire Safety and Fire Suppression skills (Emergency Response tree) improve safety and speed. You can also set "Extinguish Fires" as a Scheduler priority. It's an emergency priority, so the Seedling enters buildings for free and accesses private rooms to fight fires, effectively serving as a society firefighter.
Burns: Seedlings don't catch fire themselves, but burn injuries can be serious. Minor/moderate burns self-treat with Cooling Gel; severe burns need a Seedling skilled in Burn Care plus an Advanced Burn Treatment Kit. Keep burn remedies stocked.
Prevention: train the relevant skill before assigning work on flammable machines; keep kilns/furnaces/ovens in a separate room away from flammable furniture; space machines out; and act quickly if fire breaks out.
